I’ve had this post in my post queue for about two-1/2 weeks now. Time to get back to writing! 🙂
Now, I know that many of you who read blogs, especially weight loss blogs, know that when the author takes a break it means that he or she is experiencing some life-trouble or a slide backward with their weight loss journey. I am proud to say that while I haven’t experienced a slide backward in my journey — I did have a slight health crisis of sorts.
You see, about 3 weeks ago, I was at my cousin’s wedding. I was dressed to the nines, had my handsome husband on my arm and was ready to par-tay. I LOVE to dance! Just love it! At the gym when I hit my stride, I find myself wanting to breakout in a dance on my treadmill. Does that ever happen to anyone else? Anyway…. back to the wedding. So, the reception is going on and i’m shaking my groove thang on the dance floor. All of the sudden, I feel my left kneecap give a slide to the left (but wait! This isn’t the Tootsie Roll!!). It gave out on me and I fell. When I got back up, I had a hard time walking. The damn kneecap wanted to slide all over the place. So, hubs and I went back to the hotel, where I proceeded to ice my knee. I have to admit, I was pretty scared.
The following week, I scheduled a visit with my doctor. He took some x-rays of my injured knee. Apparently, I had a really bad strain and a chipped patella. The doctor felt I needed an MRI as well, but in order to get one I have to jump through all kinds of hoops first. Gotta love insurance companies. *sigh*
I wore an immobility brace, which gave me a peg-leg like walk for about a week. As soon as my knee felt stable enough, I could take it off. So I did.
The doctor told me that I was not allowed to do any high impact exercise, so i’ve stayed away from the treadmill at the gym. Instead, I have opted for the stationary bike and swimming. My knee is starting to heal. Almost a month later and it is in much better shape than it was. The only thing I can’t do right now is deep squats (which I have not tried on purpose but kinda experienced when I went to bend down to tie my son’s shoe laces one day) and I can’t kneel down because the pressure on my kneecap hurts.
Despite the knee injury, I have been doing well tracking my food and getting in the low-impact exercise. Exercising with a knee injury has been challenging but I try to always keep in mind that whatever I do — my goal is to strengthen my knee and not make it worse.
I’ve lost 23 pounds total and i’m still going.
It’s going to be awhile before I can Zumba though. :/
